Date: May - June 2004
Event: UNI-LOVE DAY
Location: Anacostia neighborhood of SE Washinton, DC
Challenge - Since January 2004, more than 45 young people under the age of 25 have been murdered in Washington, DC. Among the recent murdered was eight-year old Chelsea Cromartie who was sitting in her aunt's home watching television when she was shot by a stray bullet. The incident sparked outrage in the community. A coalition of concerned faith-based leaders, community advocates, city officials, and residents whose heart and minds were touched by the cowardly act, came together to speak out against the violence and tragedy taking place in the community. Rev. Wilson of Union Temple Baptist Church envisioned UNILOVE Day as a community activity to remember the lives lost, and challenged the community to take action. The challenge was to assist the coalition in breaking through the apathy, pain and hurt that many residents of the city were and are feeling regarding the senseless violence and to help devise a plan of action, community outreach effort, and media strategy to move people to act. The challenge was also to publicize the citywide UNILOVE Day of Remembrance, Atonement, Reconciliation and Consecration amid a city that seemed so immune to the violence. UNILOVE Day replaced UNIFEST, the annual Anacostia festival established in 1983 where more than 400,000 persons attended over a two day weekend to celebrate the history and culture of the African American community.
Overview of Services - Coordinated press conferences for UNILOVE DAY, the City-wide Day of Prayer and Remembrance, Worship Services and Dedication of the Wall of Remembrance; pitched stories to news directors at media outlets; met with news editors; wrote press releases and media advisories; worked with the Director on event planning and implementation; assisted with the development of the script for UNILOVE DAY Program and Chelsea Cromartie Walk; arranged television, radio and newspaper interviews; developed press materials; coordinated on-site media operations.
Results - Press persons were in attendance at all events, the Worship Service,
the Dedication of the Wall of Remembrance, the Citywide Day of Prayer and
UNILOVE DAY. Articles appeared in every major and community newspaper in the city. All networks covered the events and radio stations were present. UNILOVE Director was extremely pleased with media, given the inclement weather and the other major events taking place in the city at the same time (The Komen Walk for the Cure, Protest at the home of US Secretary of Defense, etc.)
